- Unblock BitTorrent from Your Firewall. You may not be getting the speed you want because your Firewall isn’t letting you. This is a setting that is on by default, so if you haven’t turned it off, that could explain your slow BitTorrent speed. To change this setting open the BitTorrent and go to Options > Preference.
Optimum Bandwidth Settings
The uTorrent setup Guide helps you get right upload and download speed. Press [Ctrl + G] or go to options> Setup Guide. It will run tests to check how fast is your upload and download speed and set options for locations, port settings and location. Though the default settings will work fine but if you are aware of your network speed, you can choose from the dropdown and also select a nearby location.
It will also check for the port number here to find if it is open. Make sure you have selected the checkbox which says Automatic Port Mapping. Once your test is complete, you will your real upload speed, upload limit, connections per torrent etc right there.
Transfer Cap
Transfer cap is a new feature in uTorrent which allows you to limit total bandwidth used by uTorrent and save extra money for the over usage of bandwidth.Read more here
Install DNA to accelerate content download :
In the latest release of uTorrent, There is a feature DNA which lets you faster download for DNA powered contents. You can create DNA powered content and also enable it in the client to get max out of it. Read the tutorial here. If you are using uTorrent 3.0, you can find it under preferences.
Setting Up Ports
Since utorrent is a p2p client, thus you need to have open ports which act as entry point for people to get data from you. If you don’t have open ports you won’t get sufficient download rate either. Some ISP’s and routers block.
If you are using routers, set it up to forward the ports on using in utorrent. You can check to find the correct port using the options>Setup Guide. Enter a port number and check it. It will open up a new web page which can tell if the port is open or not.
If not choose a different port till u find the correct port number. Check the above image for this. If you are using router check this page Routers Port Index , If you want to find out what are the common ports used by other programs, here is the list Cports
Make use of Streaming :
Starting from Utorrent 3.0, There is a new streaming option which lets you listen or see videos before downloading. This makes sure you are downloading files which work and are not password protected. Read more details on Streaming here.
Encrypting Network Data
Similarly some ISP’s try to limit the bandwidth to p2p applications. uTorrent have protocol encryption which makes detection and limiting by ISP’s harder. You can enable protocol encryption by going to Options > Preferences > Bittorrent. There is a section called as Protocol Encryption, choose Enabled or Force. This can speed up your bandwidth.
Removing Connection Limit for Windows 7 / Windows Vista
As you increase number of connection to your Windows machine, it will speed up download because of parallel processing. If you are using Windows 7, you can use this tool which updates tcpip.sys for number of allowed connections.
Removing the Connection Limit for XP
Here we are going to modify and replace a system file, So do it at your own risk. But its sure does work.First backup your TCPIP.Sys. Now if you are using windows XP Sp2, the chances are your “maximum half open connection limit is most likely to 10. There are patches available which can remove this problem. One such patcher is http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads . Download the English version and execute the exe in it.
Using the Web Interface:
uTorrent has a web interface called as Web UI. This allows you to control uTorrent remotely through a browser. You can do pretty much the same things you can do with the program on your computer. To enable WebUI, go to
Utorrent 3.0 :
Options > Preferences > Remote :
All you need is set your username, password and security question and use the same credential to login to your web account at web.utorrent.com.
Utorrent 2.2.1 and below :
Options > Preferences > WebUI
Click on Enable Web interface. Enter username and password. Now to access your utrrrent from web open url which should be like this http://Machine_name_or_IP:Port/gui. It will ask for user name and password. Now you can manage your uTorrent download from any where you want and even download when you are not at home.
Settings Download Speed Schedules
uTorrent like any other download manager has a scheduler but it goes one step ahead. You can speed limits during certain period of time. To use it go to Options > Preferences >Scheduler. Click on Enable Scheduler. Here you can setUpload and download rate when the schedule is enabled. You can see scheduler table where you can click on any day and give your preferences to Limit, Turnoff or Full speed and set the bandwidth usage. Dark green is full speed, light green is limited speed and white is turned off.
Create New torrent and add them to trackers
You can create your won torrent file and upload to trackers. Select from menu, File > Create New Torrent > Add file or directory. Enter the address of the tracker that you want to upload, Give a name and save it.You can also select if you want to start seeding now or even you can make it private. Now you can pass it to torrent or friends.
All these setting can definitely help you to make maximum usage out of your bandwidth. I have tested them and it works great for me. I am sure will work for you too.Enjoy it !!!
More updates to increase download speed below :
Increase numbers of outbound connection attempts at a time ( Patch TCPIP.SYS )
Windows has limit on number of outbound connections. This limits the number of concurrent connection made my torrent software to download files. In order to increase this limit you can download Half-open limit fix (patch) for Windows from here which actually patches your tcpip.sys file in windows. You free to increase tny any number of open connection and in case you want to get the original file back, it can restore tcpip.sys for you.
This is what it says
Half-open limit fix (patch) for Windows – Home
P2P (peer-to-peer) programs (µTorrent, BitComet, eMule, P2P TV etc.) are generally the most affected programs. As they use up all 10 of the half-open connections, other Internet activity, especially the loading of web pages, can be extremely slow. The delay before the beginning of opening can make some tens seconds. This happens regardless of the speed of your Internet connection.
Utorrent Port Checker
In Order to check Port forwarding is configured correctly I would suggest you to go to Utorrent Port Checker , ignore the error it gives for first time and add the port number you have forwarded in the text box. Hit Enter and see what result you get. This will tell you accurately if your port is forwarded correctly.
This is an important factor as Port forwarding increases the speed of utorrent downloads.
Remove slow seeds and peers :
In case you find the seeds or peers are slow, drop them off. More the number better it is. If you get a connection which has less number of seeds, you are advised to remove them.
Make Utorrent connect an exception to Firewall :
This is one of the crucial setting you should do. In case your firewall is blocking on number of connection for utorrent, add this program to exception list so you get high download speed.
Add Public Trackers for low seed trackers
This is another way of increasing the download speed by adding public trackers into your torrent’s tracker list. This is helpful when the number of seeders go low in count and you will have to wait for a longer time to download the file.
This list of public tracker you will need to add in your tracker list for a particular torrent which is downloading very slow. Right-Click on the torrent which is very slow and go to Properties. Then under the General tab, you’ll notice a list of existing trackers for the selected torrent. Just paste the above list right there.
You will also need to Enable DHT and Peer Exchange by selecting the appropriate check boxes in the same screen.
It has been over 13 years since we are using BitTorrent, uTorrent or other Torrent downloading application to download our desired files through torrent. The mechanism of torrent is quite effective. The computers which are downloading files becomes downloading server for other computers which are downloading files from same torrent. It increases speed (as we get many downloading servers at once) and provides continuous download (for popular torrents).
But, there are many important tweaks and configuration available in Torrent clients that help you boost the torrent downloading speed. Here, I am considering the most popular and widely used torrent client, BitTorrent.
Implement these below provided tips and tricks to boost Bittorrent speed.
1. Check Your Internet Connection Speed
Obviously, to achieve higher downloading speed you are required to have a faster connection, whether you are downloading from torrent, any other downloader or directly via web browser. Might, your network connection is fast enough but some settings are not configured probperly so read our article upoon effective tips to increase internet downloading speed which tells you the best tips to take your downloading to peak point.
Also, if your connection is slow and you’re not only concerned about downloading then check our article upon how to browse fast in slow internet connection.
2. Configure Your DNS Server
By default, while connecting to internet your computer automatically detect and assign DNS servers for your IP address. These DNS servers can be fast or slow and result in making your connection faster or slower. So it’s better to change your DNS server to widely known fast DNS servers, either Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS server (208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222).
Learn how to configure your PC’s DNS Server.
3. Choose The Perfect BitTorrent Client
As listed by Wikipedia, there are a total of 51 popular Torrent clients. Some may not be available for your operating system but out of those torrent download software which are available for your OS, check out the reviews, ratings and details to get the idea about best torrent client for your PC.
Read the list of all available BitTorrent Clients and their comparison.
4. Choose Healthy Torrent Files
Whenever you search torrent for a software, movie, etc. you finds a lot of result. Many different torrent comes out in the result among which most of the torrents works. But, you are recommended to choose those torrent which have been uploaded recently, have large number of seeds and few leech.
Seeders – Who have already downloaded the torrent and helping others to download it.
Leechers/Peers – Who are currently downloading the torrent.
Obviously, more number of seeders will increase the number of downloading servers which will increase your downloading speed while leechers will use the same downloading servers, making your downloading slow.
5. Unblock BitTorrent Client from Firewall
By default, Windows Firewall doesn’t allow BitTorrent client to utilize your internet connection. So, to make it work and download fast, you are required to unblock your Bittorrent application from Windows Firewall.
To do this, open Bittorrent. Now, navigate to Options > Preference. Here, at the Connection tab, check the box ‘Add Windows Firewall exception’.
6. Prioritize Your Torrent
There might be more than one torrent running on your system. So, it’s better to either pause other torrents, if you can’t do this, prioratize your main Torrent file for high badwidth allocation. To do this, right click on your main torrent file at Bittorrent, from Bandwidth Allocation, choose High. In the same option, Set download limit to Unlimited and upload limit to a 10kbps.
Moreover, if the torrent is NOT a single file then you can download those files of the torrent first, which you think, is important. Option is provided to prioritize torrent files too, separately.
7. Choose Different Downloading Ports
By default, Bittorrent client uses port number between 6881 and 6999 but it is recommended to choose any port number above 10000. These ports are less frequently used by other applications so they will offer you higher torrent downloading speed and continuous downloading.
To configure port number, from the Bittorrent, navigate to Preferences > Connection. At the listening port section. Add port number to “Port used for incoming connection” field. Uncheck Randomize port on each start, if it’s checked.
8. Increase Number of Max_HalfOpen TCP Connections
Files have been downloaded by the means of TCP connections over the internet. The more the number of simultaneous connections, the fast you’ll get downloading speed. By default, Windows XP and many other Windows versions limit number of simultaneous connections to 10.
Use LvlLord to increase the number of simultaneous connections on XP. It modifies thr TCPIP.sys file in Windows to allow higher number of simultaneous TCP connections. Set connections to higher digit, lets say, 50.
Now, you’re required to increase number of TCP connections at your torrent client. To do this, open Bittorrent, navigate to Options > Preferences > Advanced.
Locate net.max_halfopen and change its value to a number near to max TCP connection your have configured in TCPIP.sys file. For example, lets change 8 to 45:
9. Bandwidth and Connections
How To Increase Torrent Speed
Navigate to Options > Preferences > Bandwidth and at the Number of Connections tab configure these few settings:
Global maximum number of connections – It limit the maximum number of connections that a BitTorrent client is allowed to create for a Peer to Peer (P2P) exchange. Configuring it too high does NOT mean high speed. It would take up useless bandwidth and too low figure would miss out some peers. For my 256 kbps connection, I set it to 130.
Maximum number of connected Peer per torrent – Maximum number of peers that a BitTorrent client can connect to for any P2P exchange. Experiment by setting a number close to available peer for a particular connection. For my 256kbps connection, it is configured to 70.
Change Bittorrent Speed Increase Software Engineer
Number of upload slots per torrent – Gives maximum number of peers that a BitTorrent client will upload to for any P2P exchange. A low setting would affect download. For my 256 kbps connection, I set it to 3.
10. Some Common Tips – That Make Sense
Increase Bittorrent Download Speed
- Do NOT “Force Start” your torrent. It will led to start all the torrents available in the queue. This will spread out your upload capacity over too many connections and thus, your downloading speed will get affected.
- Enable ‘DHT network’ and ‘UPnP port mapping’ but disable ‘NAT/Firewall configuration’
- Try to use internet less, while downloading your file.
- If you can, identify useless processes that are consuming your network’s bandwidth and end them at Task Manager.
