Eurogamer reports that the group responsible for the first Wii mod chip has finally hacked the Wii U so that owners can play copied games. The group said on May 1 that it has reversed the process of authenticating the Wii U drive, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for a next generation key called WiiKey U.

According to the team, WiiKey U is billed as the first and only optical drive emulator that allows the console owner to play all Wii U games from any USB media, and is compatible with all Wii U models from all regions. It features multi-language support, an embedded Linux system, a high-speed USB 2.0 interface, a recovery mode and more.

'This looks like a variation on the optical drive emulators that appeared first on Xbox 360 - where the drive firmware was easily decrypted - and then latterly on PS3, which was much more of an effort to reverse-engineer,' said Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter.

Leadbetter pointed out that Nintendo should be highly concerned that the comms traffic between the Wii U and the drive has been hacked so quickly. 'In theory, the firmware on the drive can be rewritten with a new, secured version via a Wii U system update and thus nullify the device, but the question is how the WiiKey team reverse-engineered the system in the first place,' he added.

Unless Nintendo finds out what the WiiKey group used as an exploit, additional hackers could issue a system update for their own hardware and 'piracy will continue with barely a pause' as described by Leadbetter.

After reports of the WiiKey U surfaced, Nintendo acknowledged the group's Wii U hack but said the system that blocks pirated games in the Wii U console currently remains secure.

'Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security,' a spokesperson told Eurogamer. 'However, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products' security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.'

Naturally the WiiKey U group responded to Nintendo's statement… with a few lines of code:

Stay on target

Remember the Nintendo Wii? I sure do. I’ve argued that Nintendo’s massively successful, modestly powered, motion-control console doesn’t get nearly enough credit. Expanding the audience for video games is a wholly positive thing. And there are plenty of in-depth experiences for hardcore players too if they just got over themselves. It’s the console that most impacted the time of my life when I started getting even more serious about video games. Although there is another Nintendo console with “Wii” in the name, it’s actually the Nintendo Switch that I think has done the best job building upon the Wii’s legacy. So twelve years later, here are the best Wii games.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Yeah yeah it’s really a GameCube game and maybe the darker art style is just pandering after Wind Waker’s cel-shading, but The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess helped the Wii start off with a bang, even if the game’s own start could’ve been better paced. Arguably the single best Wii game for months, Twilight Princess to me is the best iteration of the classic Ocarina of Time-style 3D Zelda before Breath of the Wild really opened up the formula.

Super Mario Galaxy

As far as pure art objects go, Super Mario Galaxy is maybe the best Mario game of all time. Walking around spherical planets with their own gravity fields is a brilliant evolution of the 3D Mario formula. Plus it’s a great conceit for giving players tons of creative levels to leap through without caring about how they connect. But it’s the perfectly storybook melancholy of the secret backstory of Rosalina, shamefully removed from later sequels, that makes this one really special, easily one of the best Wii games.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

If not for the fact that I don’t care about half of the roster in this (the Tatsunoko anime half) I would say Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is the best Vs. game. It’s the perfect balance of high-flying aerial craziness that makes the series more entertaining than Street Fighter, but it’s not obnoxiously chaotic like the later Marvel vs. Capcom games. You can also play as Roll from Mega Man and mop people up. Automatic best Wii game.

No More Heroes

No More Heroes was one of the first games that got me thinking about how games can be art. On the surface this is a stylish action game about a nerd assassin with a lightsaber. But when you drill into the details like the specific nature of the assassin tournament, the purposefully pointless open-world, and your mysterious brother Henry, you find a searing satire of the video game industry itself and the people it exploits. Even if later sequels don’t reach the same punk narrative heights, this is still one of the best Wii games.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

The last Metroid game we could really all get behind, Retro Studios’ last crack at the franchise is a sprawling sci-fi epic. Giving players multiple planets to explore in a nonlinear order expands the Metroid formula while still honoring it. And the Wii remote pointer is the best, most accurate way to control a third-person shooter outside of mouse and keyboard. While waiting for Metroid Prime 4, remember this best Wii game.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Donkey Kong Country Returns finally delivers the truly excellent 2D platformer the original series never quite lived up to as it skated by on the nifty visuals. Retro’s approach is to make stages as exciting and organic as possible, with the spectacle and free-flowing acrobatics serving as a nice contrast to Mario’s modest grid layouts. Donkey Kong himself just moves with a satisfying animal grace and momentum that feels right with an analog stick. A later period best Wii game.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn

Nintendo Wii Crack

When the gorgeously animated Wario Land: Shake It came out of nowhere, I was intrigued to see what developer Good-Feel’s next project would be. They didn’t disappoint. Kirby’s Epic Yarn finds a way to make the adorable pink puffball even more scrumptious by turning him and his entire world into a craft store diorama. Tear through the literal fabric of reality. The game’s intentional flatness I think also helps the aesthetic. The follow-up Yoshi’s Woolly World didn’t quite do it for me because of the more filled-in look. Kirby’s Epic Yarn is the still the best yarn-based Nintendo game, one of the best Wii games.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Sell nintendo wii

I’ve never been more hyped for a game than I was during the seven-year-gap between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Say what you will about tripping, slower pacing, laggy online, and Meta Knight. But none of that cancels out the sheer excitement of a new Smash Bros. game, the glorious crossover cutscenes of the story mode, the ridiculous inclusion of Solid Snake, or the surprisingly ambitious stage creator. Later games in the franchise have better mechanics and rosters, but their ambition didn’t go as far as this, one of the best Wii games.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories

Any entry in the Silent Hill franchise has a lot to live up too. But this creepy, icy, psychological nightmare of fathers and daughters was maybe the last great excellent entry in the horror series. You can’t fight the monsters of Silent Hill. You can only run and shine your flashlight when you get a free moment hoping to figure out what’s actually going on. The way the game molds itself to your own brain hangups based on an opening questionnaire is also super unnerving. It’s no surprise that some of the minds behind Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, one of the best Wii games, went on to make Her Story, one of the best mobile games.

Wii Sports Resort

Everyone’s family playing Wii Sports at Thanksgiving really helped the Wii take off like it did. And that’s a great game, using sports to make motion controls understandable to the masses. But Wii Sports Resort outclasses it in every way mostly thanks to the superior motion control technology of Wii Motion Plus. Games like bowling and golf control with much greater accuracy. And we got tropical new games like Mii swordfighting, fake Pilotwings, and table tennis I spent dozens of hours getting lost. The best Wii game to come from its casual legacy.

Punch-Out!!

Punch-Out is one of the few NES games that actually still holds up. And the enduring perfection of its unique boxing/puzzle/fighting/rhythm game format makes it surprisingly tricky to update. So Punch-Out on Wii pretty much kept everything that already worked and just gave the characters the expressive personality (and casual racism) they always had in your mind. They even found a way to basically bring Mike Tyson back, something that definitely earns a spot on a list of best Wii games.
